Martina In The Class Room
Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC is offering a course based on Martina. The class is called "Happy Girl/Broken Wing: Martina McBride as Text" and will be taught by English professor Dr. Ron DePeter. Dr. DePeter’s comments, "Through their study of McBride's work, students will enrich their understanding of how they can use their own voices for both self-expression and community involvement." The course description is:
““Happy Girl/Broken Wing”:
Martina McBride as Text ~ Dr. DePeter
In her performances, country singer McBride has tackled issues relevant to
contemporary women: familial love and estrangement; spousal and child abuse;
cultural erosion; female self-empowerment; and the meanings of love and
self-love. In songs such as “Independence Day” (depicting a woman who uses
reactive means to free herself from an abusive relationship), “Love’s the
Only House” (decrying America’s “culture of darkness”), and “My Baby Loves
Me The Way that I Am” (touting the virtues of self-confidence), McBride has
emerged as a significant female voice in a musical genre still dominated by
masculine perspectives. As a result of her powerful interpretations of songs
written by others, McBride invites her audience to consider such questions:
What is the relationship between a woman’s individual happiness and her
political awareness? What role can women’s voices play in affecting personal
and social change? Is it possible to be a “happy girl,” even while owning a
“broken wing?”
In "The Reader, the Text, The Poem,” Louise Rosenblatt describes the act of reading as a performance: the reader of a text who evokes a literary work of art is, above all, a performer, in the same sense that a pianist performs a sonata, reading it from the text before him” (279). In this course, we will “read” Martina McBride as a text, taking into account McBride’s aural and visual self-representation. Includes a sequence of exploratory writing assignments in which we apply Rosenblatt’s theory to our reading of McBride’s music, videos, and interviews, analyzing how she performs, or authors, a self. Culminates in a project in which each student composes a multi-genre, multi-media (i.e., experimental) essay illuminating a select dimension of McBride as text.
